About Ray Miller

Ray works with David Porter Jewelry as a gemstone cutter and lapidarist.

Ray retired from Construction Management and has always been attracted to sparkly things.

"My journey into the world of rocks and gems began when I assisted a new neighbor in unloading their U-Haul. The last items in the truck were milk crates filled with rocks. My neighbor said they were just rocks, but I said nobody moves “just rocks”. And it began…. Before long I was accompanying them collecting crystals and specimens. Needless to say I was hooked. Shortly after that I acquired equipment and began cutting and polishing material into Cabochons which lead to precision gemstone cutting. After studying under master gemstone cutter Larry Matos, I was in the Garden of Gems Jewelry store where I met David Porter who looked at a gemstone I had cut and commented on the quality and asked if I had ever re-cut any gemstones. I told him I was just a beginner and hadn’t. He told me that he had some stones that I needed to practice on. Three days later we meet for lunch where he gave me the stones and invited me to his studio. After two hours of conversation we discovered we had went to high school together and our early careers were very similar. I began cutting and re-cutting gemstones for David and have developed a wonderful friendship.

It is hard to describe the wonderment and joy of seeing the transformation of a piece of gem rough into a finished gemstone every time it comes off of the faceting machine. A joy I would like to share with you so you can wear your dream.
